Lowe’s Opens Its Doors in KDH
By Kip Tabb –
The Kill Devil Hills Lowe’s is finally open and ready for the public. Opening its doors for the first time today, Thursday, May 17, the home improvement megastore will bring over 100 jobs to the Outer Banks market and a huge selection of construction needs, appliances and lighting.
Although over 100,000 square feet in size, perhaps the most impressive feature of the store is the garden center, though. “We’re a lot larger,” store David Harmon says. “We’re about 38,000 square feet. We’ve got three master gardeners working for us. It’s a very unique planting environment. Local knowledge is premium.”
Large home improvement stores tend to look alike, but Harmon points out some of the important differences that make a Lowe’s store distinctive. “We’re a member of the Outer Banks Homebuilders Association,” he says. “And we’ve got a lot of feedback because they (members) shop at . . . our Lowes store in Elizabeth City and Chesapeake. They talk a lot about how our whole lighting (department) is impressive, a lot larger than anything else.”
Other areas of the store also stand out. The appliance department in particular seems extensive. “In the six months before the store opened,” Harmon says. “I went to see most all of the property managers and hotel and motel associations. We try to customize what we do to their needs. Appliances were a big thing for all of them.”
Opening festivities are scheduled for tomorrow—although the grand opening will not come until later this month. Most of tomorrows schedule appears to be geared toward reaching out to the local community.
