Sandy Run Park
By Kip Tabb-
Sandy Run Park in Kitty Hawk may be the most beautiful municipal park on the Outer Banks, and with funding from the Outer Banks Visitor’s Center and an additional PARTFF grant, the town of Kitty Hawk has completed the loop trail around the site.
Located on the Woods Road immediately adjacent to the Kitty Hawk Garden Center, it’s worth a trip just to see this park. The trail circles a very shallow pond in the middle that is a natural habitat for wading birds. On the south end there is an osprey nest. Turtles are everywhere sunning themselves.
When first opened, the park featured two paths that did not connect. Completion of the project has created a loop trail, observation tower, fishing pier and canoe and kayak launch site.
“We’re really pleased with the results,” Joe Heard, planning director for the town of Kitty Hawk, says. “It turned out better than I pictured it.”
Sandy Run Park was created from a 16 acre parcel donated by Kitty Hawk resident, John Harris, in 2001.
